They have the unique ability to convey seemingly contradicting qualities – power and humility, boldness and subtlety, authority and valor, and at the same time a feeling of modest intimacy. “

Narkiewicz-Laine continued, “The work is powerfully honest and authentic – sublime masterpieces of sincerity, erudition, imbued with a thorough knowledge of the discipline of architecture and the pursuit of deep cultural awareness. His built work offers opportunities and equality for the less privileged, mitigates the effects of natural disasters, reduces energy consumption, pursues a resolute humanitarian agenda with the highest criteria and social goals, and offers spaces that, at best, welcome the public. Innovative and inspiring, it shows how architecture can and should improve people’s lives and influence our otherwise ordinary lives – and lift us far above the hectic and chaos of our time, our place and our cities. In this decade this is an architect who deserves even greater professional and public recognition. “

The award, jointly organized by two public institutions, the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and the European Center for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, honors American architects as well as other global architects who are active on and off several continents architectural work over time exemplifies superior design and humanistic ideals. Due to his professional role model, he has expanded the role of the architect in such a meaningful way. Only a few in this profession, especially today, are up to the demands of architecture as an artistic endeavor. This is an architect who wholeheartedly believes in the poetic simplicity of materials and interior design and never leaves an architect’s clumsy fingerprint on the design concept, intent or result. For the inspiration he provides through his complex, intellectual example and his rich contributions to architecture and humanity past and future, Trey Trahan is the recipient of the American Prize for Architecture 2021. “
