The great resignation inspires artists to quit their jobs and start their own art company.
Athens, Georgia – In April 2021, the Department of Labor reported that 4 million people in the US had quit their jobs, and job site Monster.com predicts that 95% of people are currently considering changing jobs. This trend, dubbed “The Great Resignation” by employment professionals, represents a fundamental shift in the way people approach work in a post-COVID-19 world.
Many who have left their jobs (or are about to leave) have no intention of returning to another corporate job. Rather, many of them are planning to start their own business.
“We see this trend in many students who complete our professional certificate program, the Mastery Program,” says Josh Lyon, Marketing Director of the Milan Art Institute. “The people who go through our program do so with the intention of becoming professional artists and building their own art business. You have no intention of working for anyone else after graduation. “
Lyon points out that not everyone going through the Mastery program planned to leave their job due to the pandemic.
“Sure, a lot of people on our program wanted to become professional artists before the pandemic,” he admits.
“However, the feedback we are getting from at least some of our students is that the pandemic has exacerbated the feelings of dissatisfaction they already felt with their work situation. I think that’s why we’ve seen an increase in enrollments for our programs over the past year or so. “
A March 2021 report from Microsoft called the Work Trend Index highlighted what dissatisfaction means for many workers. Of the 31,000 people surveyed by Microsoft, 54% said they were overworked, while nearly 40% said they were exhausted. Due to the restrictions on staying at home caused by COVID, people had over a year to think about their careers. With their own company, they can develop their own vision of what work means to them.
“I’ve always created other people’s visions. As a creative director you make the customer happy, â€says Alannah Anderson, a graduate of the Mastery program. To complete the program and become a professional artist, she had to ask herself, “What is my artistic voice?”
She didn’t know at first. After a while, the limitations of corporate life took their toll on Anderson, forcing her to learn what her ideal work vision was. That ultimately led her to the life she leads today. She found her voice, which was instrumental in helping her find her way back into the world of work, but on her terms.
Lyon added, “Being an artist and finding the freedom to run your own business has kept many of these students sane and I don’t think they would ever take a regular job again,†he says.
