After the Filipino toy designer Quiccs, another Filipino talent was just showing off his world-class art through a collaboration with the global sportswear brand adidas. He is graffiti and mural painter Greg Guleserian, better known as Egg Fiasco.

In an Instagram post, Egg shares that his adidas UltraBoost DNA City Pack design was inspired by his childhood memories in the Philippines. No, his memories are not about playing teks or piko or swimming in the sa probinsya river – the egg over 30 specifically refers to his love of video games, a great obsession among children of his generation.

“[We noticed na] The young liveliness of the games is the same liveliness of the Philippines and our culture … Marami tayong pakulo eh, ”he said when introducing the shoe.

While brainstorming with other Filipino artists, the native Iloilo found that playing video games is one of their favorite discussion topics, so it was only natural that it was the inspiration for his shoe.

When you look at Eggs UltraBoost DNA City Pack, the sockliner mimics the design language of video games. Meanwhile, the virtual “potions” and “elixirs” normally used in games are represented in orange and gold on the olive green heel and dark blue upper of the shoe. Fans of the artist will find that these colors, characteristic of the ’90s video game aesthetic, also come close to Egg’s own palette for his graffiti work.

The shoe possesses the same energy and fearlessness that the artist’s murals are known for. Hence, it’s one of the most exciting sneaker designs we’ve seen lately. It’s fun, but it’s also grown-up and demanding. Egg is thrilled to have been selected by adidas along with six other creatives in the Southeast Asian region. “I think adidas saw the potential. [That graffiti], it’s not just the writing on the wall. The wall speaks, ”says Egg. “Adidas saw the potential of the message and the energy behind these artists.”

A pair of UltraBoost DNA City Pack shoes from Egg costs P10,000 and is already available in adidas stores, at adidas.com.ph and in the adidas app.
