“Dopesick” wins USC Libraries Scripter Awards

The writers behind the Hulu/Star Original series “Dopesick” won the 34th Annual USC Libraries Scripter Awards at an online ceremony on the evening of February 26, 2022.

Each year, the Scripter Awards honor the best adaptations of the written word for the screen and uniquely recognize the screenwriters and creators of the source material.

Winners in the Episode Series category were writer/director Danny Strong and writer Beth Macy for Hulu’s Dopesick, based on Macy’s non-fiction book Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company that Addicted America.

“One-third of all American families have been affected by addiction,” Macy said. “My biggest thanks go to all the families who helped us tell this story and there are thousands of them.

Strong acknowledged the book’s impact by “shedding a light on this crisis and the people who have been hardest hit on the ground in a way that has really gripped the nation in such a powerful, beautiful way.”

The Scripter Awards are usually presented during a formal evening ceremony at USC’s Doheny Memorial Library. However, both this year and last year, the ceremony was streamed online due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Catherine Quinlan, Dean of USC Libraries, referred to the extraordinary year in her opening speech.

“I was really hoping that we would celebrate Scripter’s 34th year where we celebrated his first—at the beautiful Doheny Memorial Library,” said Quinlan. “While it didn’t quite work out that way, I’m delighted to be with you all online. We are so fortunate to be able to connect in this way to come together as a community to support writers, storytellers and our excellent trojan libraries.”

A selection committee of 52 writers, producers, journalists and other distinguished members – including several previous winners – selected this year’s awards.

It will be chaired by Howard Rodman, a professor at the USC School of Cinematic Arts and past president of the Writers Guild of America West. In his remarks, Rodman noted that the art of adaptation requires the screenwriter to strike a delicate balance.

“Adaptation from a book to a movie or from a book to a series is a dialogue, a murmur, and an adaptation is a translation from one language to another,” Rodman said. “It is no coincidence that in so many languages the words for ‘translator’ and ‘traitor’ are so similar. And the person who adapts a work of fact or fiction must always balance a conflicting set of commitments with aplomb and finesse.”

The 2022 Scripter Award was presented by the USC Libraries Board of Councilors, with sponsorship support from Apple Original Films, Amazon, Disney+, HBO, Hulu, Netflix and Warner Bros.

Dopesick is available to watch now on Hulu in the US, on Star+ in Latin America, and on Disney+ around the world including the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
