Check-in for the European Capital of Culture 2022
Kaunas Airport, Lithuania, renamed Fluxus Airport
The international Fluxus movement, which puts artistic process above outcome, has its roots in Kaunas, Lithuania, and to celebrate the legacy of George Maciunas, founder of the international community that includes artists like Yoko Ono, has his Hometown Kaunas their international airport to Fluxus airport.
From September 10, 2021, passengers will fly in and out of the world’s only art airlocks and will continue to do so until the end of 2022 to celebrate the year of the European Capital of Culture in Kaunas.
Virginija Vitkienė, CEO of Kaunas 2022, believes it is important to remember that Fluxus is a symbol of creativity, playfulness, unconventional approach and art without rules and boundaries: “The approval of Kaunas Airport clearly shows how inclusive, stimulating and attractive the key ideas are to be Kaunas – European Capital of Culture 2022, ”she said.
George Maciunas, the founder of Fluxus, was born on November 8, 1931 when Kaunas was the thriving temporary capital of Lithuania. The period of the First Republic is now a source of inspiration for contemporary Kaunas. As a UNESCO City of Design, member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network and European Capital of Culture 2022, Kaunas is inextricably linked to Fluxus and the legacy of George Maciunas.
The Fluxus cabinet full of art and statements from all over the world has been open in the Kaunas Gemäldegalerie for decades. Just a stone’s throw away, at the intersection of three streets, is a unique George Maciunas Square. The latter is the starting point of the main annual event of the Fluxus Festival, a massive and creative ascent of Parodos Hill. The festival is part of the Kaunas 2022 program together with the Fluxus Labs community art project.
2022 is just around the corner, Kaunas and the Kaunas district will become one big European stage: They will be more than 40 festivals, a comprehensive year-round exhibition program, more than 250 performing arts events, including 50 premieres, and a rich music program with around 250 concerts .
